At Perusall, privacy and security have always been core values that inform all of our work. We take great care with the personal data that you entrust us with. Part of this care is technological: ensuring that we’re always using state-of-the-art technology to prevent unauthorized access. But the other part is equally important: the principles and policies that we have always followed as an organization, to ensure that your data is only used in service of your teaching and learning objectives.
To that end, we recently revised our Privacy Policy to better communicate the commitment we have always had to privacy and security, and to affirm our compliance with international standards in the markets in which we operate, including FERPA in the US, GDPR in Europe and PIPEDA in Canada.
Our revised Privacy Policy affirms three key practices of ours. First, we only collect personal data when needed to provide the Perusall service. The only reason we collect personal data at all is so that we can provide a first-class social learning experience for instructors and students, and we view all data through that lens. In particular, we intentionally avoid collecting data that does not directly serve a purpose for teaching and learning or internal product development.
Second, we only share personal data when it is necessary to provide the service. We share data only with your institution and with selected vendors that help us provide the service to you. We carefully vet any third-party vendor that helps us deliver the service to you, and we choose trusted, established vendors who keep all personal data strictly confidential and also comply with the same international privacy and security standards that we do.
Finally, we never sell your personal data. Perusall is not in the business of making money from your personal data. Instead, we make money when students purchase books or other materials through the platform or when your institution purchases special services from us. The members of the Perusall founding team are all instructors, and we treat your data with the same care that we would treat our own students’ data.
You’ll be prompted to review the new Privacy Policy the next time you log in to Perusall, but you can also see the full policy here. As always, should you have any questions or concerns about privacy, security, or anything else, please feel free to reach out to us at support@perusall.com.
